When One Phone Call Changes Everything
The quiet courage of people who do what’s right — no matter the cost
A quiet morning light — the moment before everything changed.
I was totally caught off guard when my phone rang.
It was early in the morning at my dad’s house.
This person has never called me before.
I was petrified something had happened as I picked up the phone.
But they reached out anyway — knowing full well the risk.
The call was their way of doing what was right. Even though it could cost them their job, they did it anyway. They told me it was morally right to call and let me know what was going on.
After years of trying, it was finally accomplished with one phone call from this person.
That one step launched a movement I couldn’t start on my own.
The action reminded me of dominoes falling one after another.
Several other people have taken it upon themselves to help out. Even though it’s not their responsibility, they’ve chosen to do what is right.
The situation is active and unfolding as I write.
And the pattern keeps getting clearer as each new person steps out of the shadows.
People like this are the unsung heroes we see every day. They live their lives in service to others — not because they want praise or attention, but because doing what’s right is simply who they are. Their kindness, their courage, and their willingness to step in, even when it may cost them something, is what sets them apart.
We usually take people like this for granted. I know I have.
But lately, because of everything going on with my family member, I’ve started noticing them more.
Noticing the quiet sacrifices, the small acts of thoughtfulness, the simple ways people show up without being asked.
My neighbors have done this time and time again — checking on my family member daily, making sure they’re okay, meeting needs before anyone even asks. And then there’s the person who made that phone call, risking their job to make sure the right thing happened.
All of this reminded me of a Scripture:
“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” — Hebrews 13:2
I don’t know if the people helping us are angels, but I do know this: God sends the right people at the right time. And so many of them choose to fly under the radar — serving quietly, faithfully, without ever drawing attention to themselves.
Who are the unsung heroes in your daily life?
