When Coverage Doesn’t Continue
What most people don’t expect after a claim
It was there until it wasn’t.
I have had two claims filed in the decades I’ve owned my home.
Once, a water heater burst.
Not much damage.
Large drying fans were brought in.
And then it was done.
Then, after many years,
another loss.
This time, it wasn’t small.
It was the loss of my home.
I was trying to get builder’s insurance.
And renters’ insurance.
Trying to make sure everything was covered for what came next.
Then, I got a call.
My inquiry triggered it.
After seven months…
my homeowner’s policy would not be renewed.
Nothing had been said before that.
I found out because I asked.
You would think, after decades…
after only two claims…
that coverage would continue.
That’s not how it works.
Insurance isn’t based on loyalty.
It’s based on risk.
And something as significant as a full loss changes that.
Most people assume once they’re covered, that part is settled.
That it carries forward.
Especially when everything else is already moving forward.
But just like before,
what you assume continues…
doesn’t always.
If you’ve had a claim, it’s worth looking at this early.
Don’t assume your policy will automatically renew.
Ask what could trigger non-renewal.
Understand your timeline if coverage changes.
Have a backup plan before you need one.
You think once you’re covered, that part is behind you.
But coverage doesn’t always stay where you left it.
And most people don’t realize that until they have to replace it.
