Today’s Opportunity
Sometimes what we neglect around us reveals what we’ve neglected within us.
One weed at a time. Photo by Bonnie S. Heisse.
Every morning, I spend a few minutes outside soaking up some sunshine.
Lately, instead of walking toward the river, I’ve been walking up and down the gravel driveway in front of Dad’s house.
As I walked this morning, I couldn’t help noticing the weeds.
They’re slowly overtaking the driveway.
I’ve seen them before.
Each time I tell myself the same thing.
I’ll take care of them someday.
As quickly as that thought came, another one followed.
The weeds weren’t the only things waiting.
Around the house were projects that needed my attention.
So did my health.
There were goals I’d wanted to pursue.
None of them were impossible.
They’d simply been waiting for someday.
For a while, I thought my problem was motivation.
I kept waiting for the day I’d wake up feeling excited to tackle everything on my list.
That day never seemed to arrive.
The more I looked at everything that needed to be done, the less I wanted to do any of it.
Then I realized something.
This wasn’t really about the weeds.
Or even the projects.
It was about all the todays I was trading for someday.
The truth is, someday isn’t a promise.
None of us knows how many todays remain.
I don’t want to reach the end of my life wishing I had started while I still had today’s opportunity.
That doesn’t mean I have to do everything today.
God has never asked that of me.
He simply asks me to be faithful with the day He’s given me.
Maybe the answer isn’t to look at the entire driveway.
Maybe it’s to pull the first weed.
Tomorrow, I can pull another.
The same is true for the other things God has placed on my heart.
One faithful step.
One day at a time.
Today’s opportunity is enough.
Tomorrow isn’t promised.
Today is.
So today I’ll take the next step, trusting that God will walk with me every step of the way.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 (NIV)
