It Was Just Laundry
Until it wasn’t
It was just laundry. Until it wasn’t. Photo by Bonnie S. Heisse.
The dryer handle broke.
Right in the middle of finishing the laundry.
What should have been simple
wasn’t anymore.
I got it open that time.
Next load went in. No problem.
Courtney, Dad’s caregiver, went to take the clothes out.
The handle totally broke off.
She got it open.
Her height gave her a different angle on the handle.
The next day, doing laundry again.
It’s a daily occurrence at my dad’s house.
I couldn’t get it open.
Tried to use Courtney’s trick.
No luck.
Even used a step stool,
thinking Courtney is almost a foot taller.
Nope. That didn’t work either.
I had to wait until she came back
a couple of days later.
Borrowed the neighbor’s dryer
for one day.
Didn’t want to keep doing that.
Started air drying what I could.
Found out
Dad doesn’t like the air-dry feeling.
It’s one of those
supposedly simple tasks.
When the process doesn’t work,
nothing about it is simple.
A simple task
turns into something
more complex
and more aggravating.
This went on for a week.
The handle finally arrived yesterday.
Funny how it’s never the big things
that slows you down.
It’s the small ones
that stops everything.
Ever have something simple
turn into a complex problem?

When you panic and start in that mode, simple things can turn daunting. I’ve had my share of those and end up in disaster. The Bible says it’s the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, little things ruining your entire day. But in the end, the solution is only one step away.
